JOB SUMMARY:


This position provides complex and responsible translation work of various documents and activities into assigned language (Spanish) or English; serving as an assigned oral language/English translator; attending various meetings; and serving as a resource to other District personnel requiring assistance with non-English speaking persons. This position is responsible for translation duties at multiple buildings. This person works with staff and families on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), occasional evening events and board meetings.



10 Month Position - $22.70 per hour minimum



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


1. Meet one of the following four options: 1) Completed 60 hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or 2) Obtained an associate's degree (or higher) at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or 3) Met a formal State assessment by one of the following means: passed the ETS ParaPro assessment (460 or higher) or passed the applicable ACT WorkKeys assessments (Applied Mathematics-4, Reading for Information-4, Writing/Business Writing3, and Acceptable on the Instructional Support Inventory which requires observation of an applicant in a classroom setting) or 4) Met State paraprofessional approval plus 300 Professional Training Points (PTPs) or passed a rigorous local academic assessment that conforms to federal guidelines


2. One year experience in translating and interpreting the assigned language to and from English or any equivalent combination of experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


3. Completed all necessary required training for Qualified Interpreter, as defined by the Illinois State Board of Education. 2. Fluency in English and Spanish language (written and oral);
3. Knowledge of educational and legal terminology;
4. Knowledge of IEP meeting process and appropriate language utilized in such meetings;

9. Proficiency in the assigned language and English demonstrating comprehension, proper usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar;
10. Skill in human relations, mediation, conflict management and interpersonal interactions;
11. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and meet deadlines;
12. Ability to be sensitive and respectful in communications regarding all children and families, regardlessof differences in cultural heritage, lifestyle, values, and home environment;
13. Ability to collect and record performance data on students under the direction of a licensed teacher, while respecting student confidentiality and the laws regarding ethical practices of assessment;
14. Ability to correct English and assigned language usage, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
15. Ability to maintain confidentiality;
16. Ability to organize and facilitate informational meeting with parents and other community members;
17. Ability to read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or presentinformation to others;
18. Ability to utilize computer and media technology as appropriate;


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.


1. Serves as primary resource for document review for 10-month translators and/or other staff;
2. Serves as primary resource to development of parent engagement resources, both oral and written;
3. Responsible for providing translation/interpreter services
4. Serves as sender of COVID-19 related communications between schools and parents, when necessary;
5. Assists District staff with assigned language (e.g. Spanish) to English and English to assigned language translations and interpretations;
6. Actively participates in the organization and facilitation of parent-outreach programs;
7. Assists in assessing student progress as directed, including proctoring the administration of tests and maintaining confidential records;
8. Assists in maintaining the security of records, materials and equipment;
9. Assists in the scheduling, and organizing of language interpreters for Parent-Teacher conferencesand other events;
10. Assists instructional personnel in developing effective school/home communication (verbal and in writing);
11. Attends various types of District and school related meetings and events for the purpose of serving as an interpreter of assignedlanguage (e.g. Spanish) and English conversations;
12. Keeps abreast of current research-based language practices;
13. Participates in activities that develop and support cultural awareness and proficiency among District staff and students;
14. Prepares reports and maintains paperwork in a consistent, timely, and appropriate manner;
15. Performs related duties as assigned.
