Summary Of Position

The Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, implementing and maintaining electrical and automation systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable, efficient, and innovative control solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in PLC programming, SCADA system development, and a solid understanding of water and wastewater processes. Full-time, exempt position.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE

Design, program, implement, and maintain electrical and automation systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.

Position Responsibilities

Programming & Development:

  • Design and develop PLC programs using platforms such as Allen-Bradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000), Siemens (TIA Portal), or Schneider Electric (Unity Pro).
  • Configure and develop SCADA systems (e.g., Wonderware/Aveva, Ignition, GE iFIX, or ClearSCADA).
  • Implement HMI applications, including screen design, data visualization, and alarm management.
  • Develop and optimize control logic for water and wastewater treatment processes, including pumping systems, filtration, chemical dosing, and other related operations.

System Integration & Testing

  • Conduct system integration, testing, and commissioning of PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Perform factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) with clients.
  • Ensure seamless integration of PLCs, SCADA, and field instrumentation devices (e.g., flow meters, pressure transmitters, and analyzers).

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Diagnose and resolve issues in automation systems, including hardware, software, and communication networks (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
  • Support the maintenance and upgrades of existing systems, ensuring minimal downtime.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including I/O lists, functional design specifications (FDS), and operation manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ISA standards, NFPA, OSHA).

Collaboration & Training

  • Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure project success.
  • Provide training and support to end-users on SCADA systems and control functionalities.
  • Stay current with industry trends and technologies, implementing best practices to improve project efficiency and quality.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES REQUIRED

Minimum Experience : 5+ years of experience in PLC and SCADA programming for water/wastewater infrastructure projects, with demonstrated expertise in project leadership, advanced programming, and system optimization.

Degree Required : Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Control Systems, Computer Science, or related field (Or equivalent experience).

Certifications Preferred: Certification in PLC programming or SCADA systems:

(e.g., Rockwell Automation, Inductive Automation, VT SCADA, Siemens, Schneider, AVEVA).

ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or related credentials.

Training in water/wastewater systems and processes.

Experience Required

Technical

  • Proficiency in PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Siemens, or equivalent).
  • Experience with SCADA systems and HMI development.
  • Strong understanding of water/wastewater processes and equipment.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC, DNP3).
  • Knowledge of IT/OT convergence, cybersecurity standards, and networking.
  • Familiar with Databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL).

Interpersonal

  • Critical thinking skills, excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Spanish a plus.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently when required
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Combination of office (Folsom, CA) and fieldwork, including site visits to water/wastewater facilities.
  • Occasional travel to project sites for installation, testing, and commissioning may be required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Ability to perform extensive computer work and work extended hours when necessary.
  • Occasional lifting of not to exceed 50 lbs.
  • Office noise level is typically low to medium; it can be loud on a jobsite.
